A STRAIGHT-UP PERFECT 10 FROM THREE FLOYDS

This robust, citrus-packed pale ale from THREE FLOYDS BREWING in Munster, IN is quite likely the single best pale ale I’ve ever had in my storied drinking career, And that’s saying something. This is all the more remarkable after the bagging I did on their DREADNAUGHT IMPERIAL IPA a couple of weeks ago, but it’s like the two beers came from different planets. (Actually they came in the same box, shipped to me from Kevin from KevBrews). It’s been a while since I popped open a beer and reckoned it to be “unimprovable” from the first sip, but that’s what happened here. ALPHA KING PALE ALE has a wonderfully smooth mouthfeel, is quite malty, a little dry I reckon, and has just the right touch of hops – and is fragrant like you wouldn’t believe. I’m pretty sure these guys made their big-ass reputation with this one, along with their publicity stunt one-day-a-year release of their DARK LORD IMPERIAL STOUT (#2 best beer in the entire world, says the buzzing hive mind of Beer Advocate readers – I’m sure it’s true, right?). As the saying often goes with pale ales, “I could drink this all night”. Those of you who can buy Alpha King in sixers on a Friday night and enjoy it all weekend, every weekend, are the true fortunate sons of our blessed country. 10/10!

Your review is putting me THIS close to going out to my local liquor store here in So.Cal that sales this and buying a 6'er for $16 or $17. Would you (how often/at all?) buy it at that price, given it's 10/10?

Hey Steve, that's a really steep price, but it's still less than $3 a beer, and it's really that good. Try it once at least. Is Three Floyds distributed throughout Southern CA?

True, that only comes out to aboue 2 1/2 pints at a pub.... not a bad trade off. Three Floyds is not distributed in So Cal but we have a liquor store here that obtains all those great beers (Founders, Great Lakes, Three Floyds, Dogfish head) by other means and sells them for a pretty steep price (basically has to be mass trading on their part, so just the cost of shipping factored in).

In case you guys ever get a chance to visit the brew pub they have set up, check out the fish & chips, they make the beer batter out of this stuff and it's by far some of the best beer battered fish I've every had. Recently they've developed an Alpha King BBQ sauce they serve on ribs too. And of course a great selection of their beers and guest drafts. It is worth the 30 minute drive if you end up back in Chicago.

I took a trip from LA to Indy for a music gig and the local promoter asked me what I wanted and I told him grab me a local micro pale ale or something and he gave me a sixer of Alpha Kings and Heinekens and i didnt even touch the Heines....Great beer! I'm from Chicago so when I get home this summer or fall I'm going to their brewery which is minutes from where I grew up on the SouthSide! Now I gotta run out here in OC and find a specialty beer retailer to find this stuff to share with my beer officianados. Ha! For sure there's more than corn in Indiana.
